Trip Introduction;
Mt. Baruntse 7129m/23390m is located in the heart of Everest and Khumbu region of Nepal standing between two 8000m mountains -  Mt. Makalu 8481m & Mt. Lhotse 8516m.  Mt Baruntse was firstly summit by Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow in 1954 via its South-East Ridge.  An outstanding view of world’s famous Himalayas including Mt. Everest 8848m, Mt. Makalu 8481m, Mt. Lhotse 8516m, Mt. Makalu 8481m & Mt. Cho Oyu 8201m smiles very closely in front of you while summiting Mt Baruntse.  Climber can also Summit  Nepal’s highest trekking peak “Mera Peak 6416m” before summit to Mt. Baruntse as an acclimatized climbing trip to be familiar with climbing. As per our decades of experience in Trekking and Climbing adventure – we recommend Baruntse Expedition only for well-experienced climber having with high technical skills, physically strong and psychologically prepared.  

Mt. Baruntse expedition with Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition [P] Ltd starts after a couple of day preparation in Kathmandu and scenic flight to Lukla Airport. Lukla airport is a gateway of whole Everest region trekking and climbing. From there, our pre-climbing trek journey heads towards beautiful hinku valley. Before reach to Baruntse Base Camp, we walk through pristine environment with numerous numbers of safe acclimatization days to be fit and fine for Baruntse Expedition. We will set up a base camp above from Panch Pokhari. Then we will require setting - up two higher camps above from Base Camp. Technical demanding climb leads through its straightforward snow paved walls where we face some tricky steps at around 7000m. After having amazing experience of Baruntse Expedition, journey descends to Base Camp and back to Lukla for fly back to Kathmandu.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu [1345m/4411ft] and transfer to Hotel.
Our representative from Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport on your arrival schedule. Then you will be transferred to the hotel in the heart of Kathmandu city. Our staff will help you until the check-in procedure ends at Hotel. You can either have a rest at the Hotel or visit NGT’s office for gathering additional information about the expedition. In the evening, please join our welcome dinner program organized by Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition.

Day 02: Sightseeing around Kathmandu & Climbing Preparation
Today we will spend most of our day sightseeing around some of the world heritage sites of UNESCO inside Kathmandu Valley. Most importantly we will complete all the paper works and make necessary preparations required for Baruntse Expedition.
Note: It is not possible to visit all world heritage sites in Kathmandu within a day. So you can choose at least 3-4 places for a day sightseeing.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla [2800m/9184ft] [45 minutes] and Trek to Chhuthang [3020m/9905ft] [4-5 hrs Trek]
Today we will take an early morning flight to Lukla. Lukla is the gateway to Khumbu and entire Everest region of Nepal. We start our trek on the trail that passes along several hamlets and wooden yards before entering thick forested area. Our trek passes through the hillside below Kalo Himal. Kalo Himal in Nepali language means 'Black Mountain'. From there we will trek towards the beautiful summer pasture grounds of Chhuthang for our overnight stay.

Day 04: Trek from Chhuthang to Tuli Kharka [4100m/13448ft] via Zatrawala Pass [4600m/15088ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
After breakfast we leave Chhuthang and follow the trail that is a gradually ascend at first and then much steeper climb towards for the crossing of Zatrawala Pass. Our tiring climb to the top of the pass is rewarded with stunning views of Numbur Himal, Kongdi Ri, Karyolang Peak and other surrounding high peaks in the region. From the top our trail descends all the way towards Tuli Kharka.

Day 05: Trek from Tuli kharka to Kothe [4182m/13716ft] [6-7 hrs Trek]
Today we start a delightful trail that descends all the way down to Hinku River. After reaching the river bed, we will make a rather long ascend through dense rhododendron filled forest to arrive at Kothe. Kothe is located at the west side of Hinku valley and is famous for dense rhododendron forest. In spring the hills are filled with red rhododendron flowers that makes this place one of the most enchanting spot on planet.

Day 06: Trek from Kothe to Thangnak [4326m/14189ft] [4-5 hrs Trek]
From Kothe we continue our trek on the trail that goes along the ridge of Hinku river and as we approach the summer herders settlement of Gondishung. From there we pass through Lungsumgba Gompa which was built around 200 years ago. Here we can see Mera Peak along with its route scripted in rock which is a masterpiece of rock carving. A rather pleasant and easy trek will lead us to Thangnak which is also a summer herders settlement.

Day 07: Trek from Thangnak to Khare [5000m/16400ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
Our trek today is mostly uphill. After breakfast we leave Thangnak and trek over the trail that goes over the glacier towards a Kharka with amazing views of surrounding snow-topped peaks. We continue our climbing trek that leads us to the snout of Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers. From there our trail is a steep climb all the way to Khare. From Khare we will get to see stunning view of Northern Face of Mera Peak. We spend our overnight at Khare.

Day 08: Rest at Khare
Acclimatization is very essential for avoiding high altitude sickness and to ensure our successful climb to the summit of Mt Baruntse. Thus, we will take a rest at Khare for acclimatization and exploration. Besides, Khare offers a number of good hikes to its visitors which are remarkably best places for acclimatization process. While we spend our rest day at Khare, our Sherpa team will make necessary checks on our climbing gears and equipments needed for Baruntse Expedition.

Day 09: Trek from Khare to Mera La Pass [5400m/17712ft] [4-5 hrs Trek]
After breakfast we leave Khare and follow an impressive trail that goes over a rocky platform above the western ridge of Mera Glacier. We climb much steeply as we head for the crossing of Mera La Pass at 5,400 meters. From the top of the pass we will have mesmerizing views of high snow-capped mountains in Khumbu region. Our trail descends gently to reach our campsite just below the pass.

Day 10: Trek from Mera La Pass to Seto Pokhari [4850m/16247ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
Today we will follow the trail that heads higher into the yak pasture grounds of the remote valley. Our trail leads directly into the epicenter of world's towering mountains with stunning views of high alpine valleys and surrounding mountains. After some time of trekking we will reach our campsite near Seto Pokhari. Seto Pokhari literally means 'White Lake' in Nepali language and is the first of the series of lakes in Upper Honku Basin.

Day 11: Trek from Seto Pokhari to Baruntse Base Camp [5300m/17755ft] [4-5 hrs Trek]
After breakfast we leave our campsite at Seto Pokhari and continue our trek on the trail that passes through one of the remote part in the Himalayas. A gradual ascend through the beautiful Honku valley leads us to a good campsite at 5,300 meters. Our Sherpa crew will set up our base camp here and start making necessary preparations for setting up additional camps at higher altitudes.

Day 12-23: Summit Mt. Baruntse [7129m/23882ft] and back to Base Camp
We will spend several days involving in climbing training practices with adequate days for proper acclimatization. Our Sherpa climbing crew will perform all the hard works of carrying and setting up additional camps above the base camp, serving hygienic meals and finding appropriate routes for the climb. Fully equipped with all the climbing equipments we will follow the guidance of experienced climbing experts and climb closer to the summit. Weather conditions can change in seconds, so taking weather conditions into consideration we will overcome several technical climbing sections and climb to the summit of Mt Baruntse. Our much waited and tiring climb to the summit is rewarded with magnificent views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Nuptse, Chamlang, Mera Peak and other surrounding high peaks in the region. We will spend some quality time at the summit and start our descend journey following the same route back to base camp.

Day 24: Cleaning base camp and return to Seto Pokhari [4850m/16247ft] [3-4 hrs Trek]
After accomplishing the achievement of a lifetime experience - reaching the summit of Mt Baruntse, we will make a relaxed start and prepare for our return trekking. After breakfast we start to retrace our steps back on the same trail that descends gradually through Honku valley. Our trek continues until we reach Seto Pokhari for overnight camping.

Day 25: Trek from Seto Pokhari to Mera La Pass [5-6 hrs Trek]
Today we leave our campsite near Seto Pokhari and continue to retrace our steps on the same trail that descends through remote alpine valley. After some time of downhill trekking we start to follow a rising trail that ascends gradually towards our campsite below Mera La Pass.

Day 26: Trek from Mera La Pass to Thangnak [6-7 hrs Trek]
From our campsite we begin our trek by following the trail that climbs steeply towards Mera La Pass. Enjoying the magnificent views of high alpine valleys with surrounding Himalayas, our trail from the top of the pass descends passing through Khare to reach Thangnak for the overnight stay.

Day 27: Trek from Thangnak to Kothe [4-5 hrs Trek]
After breakfast we leave Thangnak and continue to retrace our steps with mostly downhill trekking all the way to Kothe. Our trail descends from high alpine vegetation and enters into the dense sub-tropical forest filled with rhododendron, oak, pine and birch trees as we approach Kothe.

Day 28: Trek from Kothe to Tuli Kharka [5-6 hrs Trek]
Today we start our trek by gradually ascending on the trail that goes along dense rhododendron forest and through the western section of Hinku valley towards Tuli Kharka. We can have great views of Mera North, Mera Central and South face of Mera Peak from Tuli Kharka.

Day 29: Trek from Tuli Kharka to Lukla [5-6 hrs Trek]
Today is the last day of our trek. We start our trek from Tuli Kharka as we ascend for crossing of the Zatrawala Pass. After a tiring climb to the top of the pass, our trail descends all the way back to Lukla. In the evening we will celebrate the successful completion of Baruntse Expedition with NGT.

Day 30: Fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla Airport
After breakfast we will take an early morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. After landing at Kathmandu Airport you will be transferred to the hotel. You can either have rest at Hotel or visit (world heritage sites of UNESCO) that weren’t possible on the second day of the trip. Enjoy your leisure time at Kathmandu. In the evening we will celebrate the successful completion of Baruntse Expedition and have a final meal together.
