Trip Introduction;
Makalu region is well known for its rough, challenging and adventurous trekking experience in the midst of wild and high mountain range. The massive Makalu - Barun National Park consists of breathtaking views of high altitude landscapes, amazing scenic mountain views, Sherpa and Rai community based villages and the park is home to many endangered species of wild animals such as snow leopards and red pandas. Previous experience of trekking is highly recommended for this trek. The trek includes the crossing of three challenging passes - Sherpani Col 6180m, West Col 6190m and Amphu Laptsa Pass 5850m which are considerably the highest and hardest passes of the entire Himalayan Region of Nepal. 

Makalu High Pass Trek with Nepal Guide Treks begins with 45 minutes scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. Then, after 2 hours drive to Khandbari, the trekking adventure begins, after a few days of tough trekking especially when climbing up the - Kauma Danda - the trail heads up to Makalu Base Camp 4800m. A day's rest at Makalu Base Camp for acclimatization and exploration is worth before crossing the first challenging pass Sherpani Col 6180m. The trail becomes steep and rough, there is a constant danger from rock-fall while descending down to the glacier and crossing it. So, trekkers should always watch out for such risks. After, Baruntse Base Camp the crossing of another challenging highest pass - West Col 6190m is made before the trail reaches Amphu Laptsa Base Camp. Crossing the third pass - Amphu Laptsa Pass 5850m - the route slowly descends through Chukkung 4730m, Tengboche 3867m, Namche Bazaar 3440m and finally to Lukla 2800m. Accommodations: 
In our published Package Trip of Makalu High Passes Trek, we have quoted the prices as per three star hotels in Kathmandu (It can be upgraded or degraded as per the requests of clients). Since the trek is located inside remote and less beaten mountain regions of Nepal, we will not find comfortable tea houses at all places. So we will provide tea house accommodation at available places (5 nights at initial days & 4 nights before the trek ends) and tented camps for rest of the trekking days. Our Sherpa crew will set up comfortable camping accommodation by choosing good campsites. Moreover your camps will be set up and taken down by our crew members. Additional accommodation arrangements such as comfy mattresses and warm sleeping bags will be provided to you during the camping days.

Meals: 
Included meals in Makalu High Pass Trekking, BB plan in Kathmandu and similarly full meals on board (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) will be provided during the whole during the trekking and camping period of Makalu High Pass Trek. Our kitchen crew will prepare hygienic foods to make sure that you are fit and healthy for further trekking and camping. There might not be several choices within the menus as in tea houses during the camp days but best available meals will be prepared and served by our experienced camping kitchen crew. Most importantly you will have to cope and understand that it would be difficult to carry varieties of food from accessible places to those remote mountains but we will make sure that you are provided with safe, healthy and hygienic meals during the whole Makalu High Pass Trekking.  

Physical Conditions and Experience Required: 
Makalu High Pass Trek is one of the most challenging and demanding trekking in the entire Himalayas. The trek includes the crossing of three challenging passes - Sherpani Col at 6180 m, West Col at 6190 m and Amphu Laptsa Pass 5850 m which are considerably the highest and hardest passes of the entire Himalayan Region of Nepal. Trekking continuously for 5-6 hrs a in high altitude as demands a high level of physical fitness and should be maintained with at least 2 hours daily physical fitness (running, jogging, and other exercises) one week prior to the actual trekking date. Hence precious trekking experience is highly recommended to every trekker wanting to do Makalu High Pass Trek.

Best Season for Makalu High Pass Trek:
3 Months in Spring ( March, April, May) & 3 Months in Autumn (September, October , November) is considered best season for Makalu High Pass Trek. During this time one gets to enjoy magnificent view of high mountain ranges  including - the top of the world Mt. Everest 8848m, third highest Mt. Kanchenjunga 8586m, fourth highest Mt. Lhotse 8516m, and fifth highest Mt. Makalu 8485m. Trekking in this region with camping crew can also be done around December, January and February. However June, July and August is the monsoon season with heavy rain and clouds. 

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel
Our airport arrival and departure representative will be at Tribhuwan International Airport on your arrival schedule. You will be transferred to hotel and our staff will help you until check-in procedure ends at Hotel. Either you can have rest at Hotel or visit NGT’s office. In the evening, join our welcome dinner program organized by Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition Team.

Day 02: Sightseeing at Kathmandu
Note: It is not possible to visit all world heritage sites in Kathmandu within a day. So you can choose at least 3-4 places for a day sightseeing.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar [45 min flight] & Drive to Khadbari [1030m/3378ft] [2 hrs drive]
Today we take an early morning flight to Tumlingtar's grass airstrip. From Tumlingtar we take a two hours drive further to the Newari and Rai village of Khadbari - the starting point of our trek. Khadbari is the administrative centre of Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area where we need to register at the park office before heading further.

Day 04: Trek from Khadbari to Chichira [1830m/6002ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
We start our trek from Khadbari passing through picturesque villages to Mane Bhanjyang. We continue on our trail by climbing a small ridge to a minor pass at Bhotebas 1740m from where good views of Makalu can be enjoyed. From there we follow the route passing through moss covered forest along the ridge towards Chichira, where there is a large camping site with few tea houses.

Day 05: Trek from Chichira to Num [1490m/4878ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
From Chichira we start early to get the clear views of Makalu. Passing through the village of Kuwapani we head towards the crossing of another minor pass Daju La 2100.  From the pass we continue to walk descending through the steep section of the forest to reach the large village of Num.

Day 06: Trek from Num to Seduwa [1460m/4788ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
We continue on our trail by gently descending down to reach the Arun Nadi. After crossing the suspension bridge we climb up through dense forest towards a large trading village of Seduwa. Here at Seduwa we need to register again at the National Park office.

Day 07: Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon [2070m/6789ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
From Seduwa we follow an easy trail passing through Murmidanda where we can see local students going to the school. Then, we climb uphill towards Narbugaon from where the trail heads through hillside forests and cultivated fields towards Tashigaon. Since Tashigaon is the last village on the trail, it is a good idea to buy the necessary items here.

Day 08: Trek from Tashigaon to Kauma Danda [3470m/11381ft] [6-7 hrs Trek]
Today we follow the trail that climbs steeply through the beautiful cloud forest. We continue to ascend passing through Unshisa where there a campsite and a tea shop which is open in the main trekking season. From there we climb further up to reach our campsite at Kauma Danda.

Day 09: Trek from Kauma Danda to Mumbuk [3570m/11709ft] via Kauma La [3603m/11817ft], Tutu-La [4125m/13530ft] and Keke La [4170m/13677ft] [7-8 hrs Trek]
Today is one of the toughest day on the trek as we continue on our trail crossing Kauma La Pass  with magnificent views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, Kanchenjunga and Jannu. From there we climb further up for the crossing of Tutu-La Pass before descending to a large lake - Kalo Pokhari. We head further by ascending towards Keke La Pass, from where we can get good views of Chamlang range and Tibet to the north. A steep and rocky descend from the top of the pass leads us to the campsite of Mumbuk.

Day 10:  Trek from Mumbuk to Nehe Kharka [3700m/12136ft] [4-5 hrs Trek]
We continue to descend downhill to reach Barun Nadi before climbing up along the steep hillside, often affected by the landslides. We follow the trail that goes along the loose ground, we should be very careful while we walk along the loose landslide trails. After few hours of walking our trail leads us to Nehe Kharka.

Day 11: Trek from Nehe Kharka to Shersong [4615m/15137ft] [6-7 hrs Trek]
From Nehe Kharka we continue to walk on the loose trails before crossing the Barun Nadi to the grassy fields of Yangri Kharka. From here we follow the trail passing through rhododendron, pine and fir filled forest towards Langmale Kharka. The trail now enters an ancient lateral moraine through which Barun Nadi flows. To the left is the large glacial lake that fills the valley, an easy trail from here leads us to Shersong.

Day 12: Trek from Shersong to Makalu Base Camp [4800m/15744ft] [4-5 hrs Trek]
We now follow the trail that turns right and heads up for the climbing of more moraine. Once reaching the top we start to descend gradually to the crossing of a small bridge and continue towards the stone huts of Makalu Base Camp. Makalu Base Camp offers one of the best mountain viewpoints in Nepal.

Day 13: Rest at Makalu Base Camp – For Acclimatization & Exploration.
As acclimatization is necessary in the higher altitudes, today we take a rest day for acclimatization and exploration at Makalu Base Camp before heading upwards to the higher altitudes the following days.

Day 14: To Swiss Base Camp [5150m/16892ft] [5-6hrs Trek]
From Makalu Base Camp  we follow the well defined trail that passes through Hillary Base Camp. We then walk along a smaller trail on the south side of Barun Glacier Valley and camp at Swiss Base Camp.

Day 15: Trek to Sherpani Col Base Camp [5700m/18696ft] [6-7 hrs Trek]
The trail from here becomes hard as it climbs towards a steep boulder filled gully. After a while of climbing the gradient eases somewhat before arriving to a small flat area. From there an hour of climbing leads us to Sherpani Col Base Camp at the snout of a glacier.

Day 16: Acclimatization at Sherpani Col Base Camp.
Before crossing the challenging passes we must make sure that we are properly acclimatized because altitude sickness can affect a person mentally and physically. Thus, today we take a rest day for acclimatizing, for maintaining our physical fitness before continuing on higher altitudes the following days.

Day 17: Cross Sherpani Col [6180m/20270ft] to Baruntse Base Camp [8-9 hrs Trek]
We make an early start for the crossing of the challenging pass Sherpani Col. Following the trail by the side of the glacier we climb towards the prayer flags that requires a fixed rope and handlines to reach the top of the Sherpani Col. From there we start to descend down to West Barun Glacier. After crossing the glacier we head towards our camping site at Baruntse Advanced Base Camp.

Day 18: Cross West Col [6100m/20008ft] and trek to Amphu Labsta Base Camp [5400m/17712ft] [7-8 hrs Trek]
Today, we follow a trail that climbs a loose rocky route reaching the southern end towards a rockwall that forms the pass. Once we are at the top of West Col, the descend of 200m brings us to Honku Basin. From here we decline vigorously to reach Amphu Labsta Base Camp.

Day 19: Cross Amphu Labsta Pass [5850m/19188ft] and trek to Chhukung [4730m/15514ft] [8-9 hrs Trek]
Today we head for the crossing of probably the most dangerous pass in Nepal that needs care when climbing and declining. Since the climb includes icy slopes and snow covered trails, we head upwards with full climbing equipments. From the top of the pass we descend downhill following the steep rocky trail passing through Amphu Labsta Glacier and towards Chhukung.

Day 20: Trek from Chhukung to Tyangboche [3867m/12683ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
From Chhukung we follow a rather easy trail passing through several icy streams we head towards Bibre. From Bibre we continue our route by walking along the stone walled fields and alpine landscape towards Dingboche. From here we descend a fairly moderate trail to reach Tyangboche.

Day 21: Trek from Tyangboche to Namche bazaar [3440m/11283ft] [4-5 hrs Trek] 
The walk from Tyangboche is mostly downhill on the main busy trail with a few steep climbs for an hour from the bridge at Phungitenga, near to Shanasha. The scenic and pleasant walk through Khumjung brings us to Namche Bazaar - The Sherpa Capital.

Day 22: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla [2800m/9184ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
The last day of our Makalu High Pass Trek leads from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. The trek is pleasant, except for few short uphill climbs and then down to the Bhote- Koshi River crossing it three times. The last uphill climb of 45 minutes will bring us to Lukla for our overnight stay.

Day 23: Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu 
We take an early morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. Enjoy the scenic mountain flight after the wonderful trekking experience during Makalu High Pass Trek with Nepal Guide Treks.

Day 24: Free day at Kathmandu 
You would surely like to see as much of Kathmandu as possible. An early start is practical to visit the temples of Kathmandu. Also, walking around the shopping area of Thamel is worth spending quality time at Kathmandu. We will have a final meal together in the evening.

Day 25: Transfer to International Airport for departure

Amazing Trek @ Makalu High Pass Trekking

We are a group of 5 people who wanted to do this trek .We didn't know exactly whom to book our trek.
