Trip Introduction :

Bumthang Owl Trek is an excellent opportunity for exploring and experiencing the culture and nature of the central Bumthang region of Bhutan. The trekking route offers a lifetime experience as it allows us to explore village settlements as well as the sacred sites of monasteries while passing through the regions rich flora and fauna.

Besides, we get the best views of breathtaking valleys and surrounding high peaks including the highest unclimbed peak in the world – Mt. Gangkhar Puensum. Bumthang Owl Trek with Nepal Guide Treks starts at Kathmandu. After spending a full day sightseeing at Kathmandu valley, we take a flight to Paro, Bhutan. From Paro, we drive to Bumthang.

We begin our trek from Manchugang gradually climbing uphill towards Dhur village – the biggest village in Bumthang. We continue to climb through the blue pine forest towards our campsite aDay 10: t Schonath, where hemlock and juniper trees are in abundance. Hooting of owls through the night is quite common in this region which is how the trek got its name as ‘The Owl Trek’.

We continue to follow the trail that leads through many species of rhododendron, spruce, fir and hemlock trees towards the crossing of Drange La Pass at 3600m. From here we ascend to the ridge of Kitiphu for an overnight stay with a wonderful view of the valley, Mt. Gangkhar Puensum 7451m and other surrounding high peaks.

After witnessing the magnificent sunrise view at Kitiphu, we gradually descend downhill passing through the monasteries of Zambalha, Chuedak and Tharpaling. We follow the classic and traditional trek route between Trongsa and Bumthang to finally reach Jakar.

  • Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu [1345m/4411ft] & transfer to Hotel.

    Our representative from Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport on your arrival schedule. Then you will be transferred to the hotel in the heart of Kathmandu city. Our staff will help you until the check-in procedure ends at the Hotel. You can either have rest at the Hotel or visit NGT’s office for gathering additional information about the trip. In the evening, please join our welcome dinner program organized by Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition.

  • Day 02: Sightseeing at Kathmandu Valley
    Today we will spend most of our day sightseeing around some of the world heritage sites of UNESCO inside Kathmandu Valley.

    Note: It is not possible to visit all world heritage sites in Kathmandu within a day. So you can choose at least 3-4 places for day sightseeing.

  • Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Paro

    Today you will be transferred to the airport for taking a flight to Paro. After landing at Paro airport you will be met by our representative from Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition. Then you will be transferred to the hotel in Paro. In the afternoon we can visit the Ta Dzong Museum where several religious relics, Bhutan’s art and handicrafts are well preserved. Then, visit Rimpong Dzong for seeing the painting of great saint Milarepa. We will spend our overnight in Paro.

  • Day 04: Drive from Paro to Wangdue via Punakha [5-6 hrs Drive]

    After breakfast, we leave Paro and drive passing through Thimpu – ‘ Capital city of Bhutan ‘. From there, our drive continues over Dochula Pass at 3,150 meters with stunning views of snow-capped mountains. From there, our drive continues as we approach Punakha. We will pay a visit to Punakha Dzong which is situated in between two river – Pho Chu ‘ Male River ‘ and Mo Chu ‘ Female River ‘. Then we drive towards Wangdue for our overnight stay.

  • Day 05: Drive from Wangdue to Bumthang via Trongsa [4-5 hrs Drive]

    Today we will depart from Wangdue and continue our drive across the tropical vegetation and scenic views of scattered settlements of rural Bhutan. Our drive continues over open valleys with meadows and several yak herders camp. Enroute we will see Chendeji Chorten which was built in Nepalese style in the 15th century. From there we drive passing through several villages including Trongsa, where we will make a short stop for visiting Trongsa Dzong. A short drive from there will lead us to Bumthang for the overnight stay.

  • Day 06: Trek from Manchugang to Dhur Village [2900m/9512ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]

    We start our trek from Manchugang and head towards the biggest village in Bumthang. Our trail is a mixture of several uphill and downhill trekking. After a few hours of trekking, we will arrive at Dhur village. With the total population of about 800 people, Dhur village consists of three types of inhabitants – Kheps (taxpayers) with cattle and farmlands, Brokpas (nomads) with Yaks and the third group having both. After arriving at Dhur village, we will take a short walk above the village for enjoying the view of the whole village below us. Overnight camping at Dhur village.

  • Day 07: Trek from Dhur village to Kitiphu [3870m/12693ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]

    After breakfast, we will leave our campsite at Dhur village and follow a slightly rising trail that goes through a forest filled with rhododendron, bamboo, fir and birch trees. In the spring season, the forest is filled with rhododendron flowers making the area one of the most enchanting spots on the planet. We will ascend steeply to reach the top of Drange La Pass at 3,600 meters. From the top of the pass, we will descend for a while before climbing again to reach our campsite near Kitiphu. From here we can get a magnificent view of Mt Gangkhar Puensum 7451m – Bhutan’s highest mountain.

  • Day 08: Trek from Kitiphu to Jakar [5-6 hrs Trek]

    Today we will get our early for enjoying the sunrise view over the stunning mountains. After breakfast, we continue to trek on the trail that descends gently passing through the monasteries of Zambhala, Chuedak and Tharpaling. Our trek continues as we follow a narrow trail that goes along the ridge of Kikila before reaching an ancient trail junction between Trongsa and Bumthang. From there we continue our trek until we reach Jakar – the ending point of the trek, for the overnight stay.

  • Day 09: Drive from Jakar to Punakha [6-7 hrs Drive]

    Today we will make a relaxed start and take a drive from Jakar and head towards Punakha. Along our drive, we will pass along several roadside villages and yak herders camp. We will make stops at some interesting attraction points. After a few hours’ drive, we will arrive at Punakha for spending our overnight. In the evening feel free to look around the streets of Punakha.

  • Day 10: Drive from Punakha to Paro via Thimpu [5-6 hrs Drive]

    Today we will take a drive from Punakha and drive along the same route passing through Thimpu to reach Paro. We will make several stops along our drive journey for visiting sites with religious and cultural significance.  After arriving at Paro – we will have a rest much needed for the hike to Taksang Monastery (Tiger Nest) the following day. Feel free to explore the streets of Paro.

  • Day 11: Morning hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery [3180m/10430ft] [2-3 hrs Hike] & back to Paro.

    Today we will accomplish a hike to Taktsang Monastery also known as ‘Tiger’s Nest’. It is the most valued temple of Bhutan that literally hangs on a fascinating granite cliff overlooking the whole Paro valley below. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche flew on a tigress’ back on this site to subdue a demon. After that, he stayed and meditated here for three months. We will be spending most of the day hiking and exploring around Tiger Nest Monastery. We descend back to arrive at our hotel at Paro. It is our last day at Paro before flying back to Kathmandu.

  • Day 12: Fly from Paro back to Kathmandu.

    After the wonderful experience of completing ‘ Bumthang Owl Trek,’ you will take a flight from Paro back to Kathmandu. Our representative will pick you up at the airport in Kathmandu. Then a drive to the hotel in Kathmandu City. You will be spending one more additional day for exploring Kathmandu Valley. Remaining sites of world heritage within Kathmandu those weren’t possible on the second day can be visited on the leisure day at Kathmandu.

  • Day 13: Leisure day at Kathmandu

    You would surely like to see as much of Kathmandu as possible. An early start is practical to visit the temples of Kathmandu. In the evening walk around the souvenirs shopping area of Thamel is worth spending quality time at Kathmandu. We will have a final meal together in the evening after the completion of ‘Bumthang Owl Trek’ with Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition.
