Ghorepani Poonhill Trek with Nepal Guide Treks starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From Pokhara, we will take another short drive to Nayapul – the starting point of our trek. From Nayapul we will start our trek along the trail that leads through interesting villages, lush and green forests filled with rhododendron, pine and oaks trees towards Tikhedhunga. From there, our trail climbs steadily for a few hours until we arrive at Ghorepani.

Then we will accomplish an early morning hike to Poonhill at 3210 meters for enjoying a stunning sunrise view over Mt. Dhaulagiri 8167m, Annapurna South 7219m, Machhapuchhre (Fish-Tail) 6997m, Tukuche Peak 6920m, Hiunchuli 6441m and other numerous snowcapped peaks. We will spend some quality time at the viewpoint before heading back to Ghorepani. From there, our trail descends down to Ghandruk – a large Gurung settlement.

  • Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu [1345m/4411ft] transfer to Hotel.
    Our airport representative will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport on your arrival schedule. Then you will be transferred to the hotel located in the heart of Kathmandu city. Our staff will help you until check-in procedure ends at Hotel. You can either have rest at Hotel or visit NGT’s office for gathering information about the trek.   • Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara [820m/2689ft] [5 hrs drive]
    After breakfast, we will take a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Our drive is over the scenic zigzag hilly roads along the banks of Trisuli River. The drive journey takes about five to six hours to reach Pokhara. Pokhara is a beautiful town set on the banks of the Fewa Lake. It is tourist’s paradise full of natural as well as cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, temples of Buddhist and Hindus along with the beautiful mountains. It is smaller and much less hectic than Kathmandu.

  • Day 03: Drive to Nayapul [1.5 hrs drive]Trek to Tikhedhunga [1577m/5172ft] [3-4 hrs trek]
    Today we leave Pokhara and take a drive for another one and half hour towards Nayapul – the starting point of our trek. From Nayapul we start our trek along the sub-tropical Modi Khola river valley towards Birethanti. At Birethanti we will have to make a stop at the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)’s checkpoint. After completing the registration and permit check process we continue our trek through terraced rice fields towards Tikhedhunga for the overnight stay.

  • Day 04: Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani [2855m/9364ft] [5-6 hrs trek]
    From Tikhedhunga our trail crosses a small stream before climbing up a steep stone staircase towards the large Magar village of Ulleri at 2070 meters. We continue our trek through rhododendron and oak filled forests passing through Nangethanti to reach Ghorepani. From here we will have good views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre and other fascinating snow-capped peaks.

  • Day 05: Morning hike to Poonhill [3210m/10528ft] & Trek to Tadapani [2590m/8495ft] [5-6 Hrs Trek]
    Today we will accomplish an early morning hike up to Poonhill for enjoying the magnificent sunrise view over Mt. Dhaulagiri 8167m, Annapurna South 7219m, Machhapuchhre (Fish-Tail) 6997m, Tukuche Peak 6920m, Hiunchuli 6441m, and other numerous snowcapped mountain peaks. Then, we continue our trek downhill through dense rhododendron filled forest towards Tadapani. On our route, we can see a variety of wild animals, birds with eye-catching waterfalls and sceneries along the way.

  • Day 06: Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk [1940m/6363ft] [3-4 hrs Trek]
    From Tadapani we follow an easy trail by descending gently through rhododendron and oak filled forests. We can hear different kinds of birds chirping on the way. This is one of the popular destinations for the birds’ lovers. Ghandruk – is a big Gurung tribe settlement. There are a handicraft centre and Gurung museum. From this village, we can see good views of Annapurna South 7219m, Hiunchuli 6441m, Gangapurna 7455m, Annapurna III 7755m and Fish Tail 6997m.

  • Day 07: Trek from Ghandruk to Pothana [1890m/6199ft] [5-6 hrs Trek]
    From Ghandruk we continue our trek by declining steeply down following the stone staircase to Kimbu. Kimbu or Beehive is located at an elevation of 1200 meters on the bank of Modi Khola. From here we begin to climb the stone staircase up to Landruk. We continue on our trail that ascends through Deurali and towards Tolkha village. The rest of the trail descends gently down to the village of Pothana.

  • Day 08: Trek from Pothana to Dhampus Phedi [1130m/3706ft] [4-5 hrs trek]
    After breakfast, we leave Pothana and descend gradually for at least an hour and then follow the gravel road for about two hours. Our trail from there descends steeply to Phedi as we pass through paddy fields and forest protected by a local community. After short trekking, we will arrive at Dhampus Phedi where our trekking ends technically. We will spend the overnight in Dhampus Phedi.

  • Day 09: Drive from Dhampus Phedi to Pokhara [1 hr drive] Sightseeing at Pokhara
    Today we will make a relaxed start and take our breakfast in leisure. From Dhampus Phedi we will take a drive for our return journey to Pokhara which takes around one hour. After reaching Pokhara, you will be transferred to the hotel. Feel free to explore around Pokhara. It is a good idea to spend your day relaxing/boating at Fewa Lake or sightseeing around the city. Overnight in Pokhara.

  • Day 10: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu [5 hrs drive]
    It takes approximately five to six hours drive to reach Kathmandu from Pokhara. We drive along Prithvi Highway which offers scenic hilly zigzag roads through the banks of Trishuli River. The daily activities of the local people can be seen along the road when we pass through many villages and towns.

  • Day 11: Sightseeing at Kathmandu
    Click here for detailed information about World’s Heritage Sites of UNESCO in Nepal. You would surely like to see as much of Kathmandu as possible. An early start is practical to visit the temples of Kathmandu. Also, walking around the shopping area of Thamel is worth spending quality time at Kathmandu. We will have a final meal together in the evening.

Ghorepani Poonhill Trek is one of the iconic trekking destinations of the Annapurna Region. Poonhill, which is also very popular as a vintage point for the exotic sunrise view is the Key highlight of this trek. This trek is also popularly known as Annapurna Panorama Trek. Poonhill (3,210m) gives invigorating view of Annapurna I, II, III and IV along with Dhaulagiri ranges, Lamjung Himal, Gangapurna, Manaslu etc.

The Annapurna Poonhill Trekking is classified as a moderate trek because of its steep terrain, high elevation and basic facilities. This trail demands moderately fit person having great highland passion. Ghorepani Poonhill Trek becomes a difficult journey just because of the altitude. Altitude Sickness
Altitude Sickness is also known as Acute Mountain Sickness. It is a medical condition when our body could not adjust to the environment due to the low level of oxygen in the air. At high altitude, the level of the oxygen in the air is thin due to which our body can not adjust easily to the environment. Normally, it is more common above 2500 meter above the symptoms.
Common Symptoms: Headache, Nausea, Dizziness, Vomiting, Fatigue, Loss of Appetite, Trouble Sleeping etc.

Types of Altitude Sickness:

  •  Acute Mountain Sickness: It is very common at high altitude and can cause vomiting, dizziness, nausea etc. overall, it is the mildest form of altitude sickness.
  • High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE): It is a very dangerous and life threatening conditions because fluid is built up in the lungs.
  •  High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE): It is the most severe stage of Altitude Sickness because fluid is built up in the brain. It is life threatening one. The victim will be unable to walk, breathe and ultimately in Coma.

Treatment:
If you realize any other symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness other than Headache, just change your elevation. If the symptoms are severe, you need immediate medical attention. You need to consult with a physician. The best treatment of Altitude Sickness is to climb down as low as possible. If you are at a very high altitude, just climb below 4000m. If you have High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) , you might need a steroid called Dexamethasone. If you have High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), you will need supplemental oxygen and other medications.

Prevention:
The best way to prevent Altitude Sickness is to have a lot of Acclimatization. That simply means climb high and sleep low. Here are some of the basic guidelines for preventing Altitude Sickness.

  • Do not climb hurriedly. Keep your pace steady.
  •  Do have a lot of acclimatization.
  • Do not drink alcohol or do not smoke.
  •  Drink plenty of fresh water.
  •  Eat plenty of hygienic foods.
  •  Use Diamox Pills 24 hrs prior to the climb.
